UNIONMADE
WHITE SHIRTS
Having worked for Gap for as many years as I did, I think of the white shirt as a building block of any wardrobe. It is both a blank slate and a palette cleanser. Like the white T-shirt, it is ubiquitous and anyone can wear it. Unionmade ‘White Shirts’ was an exercise in personal style and democratic products. This collaboration was my first foray into a private label line at Unionmade. I worked with New England Shirt company to design eight styles of white shirts, using different fabrications and details. This is still one of my favorite projects because it was a creative process around constraint and focused on a simple, commercial product. We shot the campaign in NYC with photographer and friend Jason Rodgers. My dear friend Mac Folkes did the casting and even phoned in a favor; managing to get Jenny Shimizu to model for us. In addition to still photography, we also made a video for each shirt that were shot by artist Bubi Canal. This was a true collaboration in every regard; everything from product design, casting, photography and creative.
